The Justice Department collects statistics on tort trials in the federal courts . The statisitics for the 2002-2003 period are as follows.

Therefore about 1.6% of the federal tort cases went to trial. Plaintiffs won about 42% of the tort trials and the defense won about 58%% of the tort trials.In those 704 tort trials where a monetary awards were made, the median damage award was $201,000. This means half of the verdicts were for more than $201,000 and half of the verdicts were for less than $201,000.
